Evidence brief
Ask what the evidence is for.
Someone calls a treatment peptide therapy. Ask for the exact product before judging the claim. The broad label can cover very different things.
Product approval and preparation
The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, is the US agency that reviews medicines.
Semaglutide is the medicine ingredient in some products used for diabetes or weight loss (product records checked September 26, 2026).
When records were checked on September 26, 2026, some semaglutide products under the names Ozempic and Wegovy had US FDA approval.
FDA approval is for a specific product and the uses listed on its label.
A pharmacy mixing its own medicine with the same ingredient does not give that medicine the approval of a ready-made product.

Compounding is preparing a medicine to order rather than using a ready-made product.
Federal law sets different rules for a pharmacy or doctor preparing medicine for a patient identified by name and for an FDA-registered facility preparing batches (law checked September 26, 2026).
In the pharmacy or doctor path, a licensed pharmacist or doctor prepares medicine for a named patient who has a valid prescription.
The batch-making path covers medicines that must be free of germs, made at a facility registered with FDA.
That facility does not always need a prescription with an individual patient’s name.
Following these rules does not give the finished medicine FDA approval.
FDA does not review the medicine’s safety, how well it was made, or how well it works before sale.

A research claim
Retatrutide is a drug being studied for long-term weight loss, not an approved US medicine (records checked September 26, 2026).
FDA said retatrutide could not legally be made to order under federal law when its warning was checked on September 26, 2026.
It was not an ingredient in an approved drug, and FDA had not found it safe and effective for any condition.
